The findings of coins

The findings of coins represent one of the most interesting acquisitions of the research at Montagna dei Cavalli, not only for the study of mints and monetary circulation in western Sicily during the 4th century and the first half of the 3rd century B.C., but also for the fundamental contribution to the interpretation of the excavation itself and the dating of the structures.

Of particular importance is the discovery, for the first time in official excavations, of coins attributed to the Hippana mint.

Approximately 70 per cent of the 258 ancient coins found are Punic bronze issues that were widespread in Sicily between the 4th and mid-3rd century B.C., mainly those with the head of Core, horse and palm with male head, running horse, front part of horse with palm, Pegasus and head of Core, silver litra.
